the line

“The Line” is a media project about women in Belarusian art, their visibility, memory, and voice.
Its idea emerged from our earlier text “Women in Belarusian Art: Our Past and Present”, where we made the first attempt to answer Linda Nochlin’s long-standing question, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?”, from a Belarusian perspective. Realizing back in 2022 that the subject of women in art cannot be encompassed in a single text, we conceived this project — to continue the conversation, both literally and symbolically.

The “The Line” project consists of three interviews with contemporary women artists and two analytical essays focusing on the representation of women in art: in museum exhibitions and in a broader historical perspective, from the Soviet era to the present day.

Our goal is to preserve the trace of names, stories, and experiences of remarkable Belarusian women within the cultural landscape. That is why “The Line” is not just a media project, but our attempt to draw a visible — though still fragmented — line of Belarusian women’s art and to leave it as an accessible archive.
