Inside rural Belarus: the Belarus Traditional Interiors project announces its first book, Traditional Interior. People

Belarusian photographer Andrei Liankevich has announced the release of the first book from his project about the interiors of Belarusian homes. “Traditional Interior. People.” will be dedicated to traditional rural interiors and the people who live in them. The publication is planned after a year of work on the materials, and the team is now collecting pre-orders for the first print run. Here we explain what the book includes, how to order it, and how much this treasure will cost.

The book brings together photographs of village houses, portraits of their residents, as well as images of bedspreads, towels, “sacred corners,” and embroidery. In addition to the visual material, it also contains life stories of nine people from different generations and from various regions of Belarus.

Among the book’s protagonists are: 80-year-old grandfather Kasmach from the area around Valozhyn, who, according to his memories, recovered from an illness through holy water and prayers at a time when religion was forbidden; Katsiaryna Panchena, known as Baba Katya from the village of Pagost, whose house-museum has become internationally known and an important center for preserving traditional culture; the young Shatsyor family, who in a village house near Maladzyechna have assembled one of the largest collections of bedspreads and embroidery; and others.

The publication also includes texts by curator Anna Karpenka about the Traditional Interior photo project, and by folklorist Tatsiana Valodzina on the features of the Belarusian traditional interior.
The book will have 272 pages in Belarusian and English and will be printed in color. Its price is expected to be around 60 euros. The team is currently collecting pre-orders to determine the size of the print run. Orders can be placed via the link.
The release of Traditional Interior. People is expected in 6–8 weeks.

Andrei Liankevich, Belarusian photographer, born 1981 in Grodno. In 2005-2010 he has cooperated with the European Press Photo Agency (EPA) and in 2007-2012 he worked with the Anzenberger Agency. In 2008, Andrei joined a collective of young photographers, SPUTNIK. His works are published in international media as The New York Times, Le Figaro, Newsweek, Die Zeit, Spiegel, GEO, Vanity Fair, Readers Digest and the International Herald Tribune.
Andrei Liankevich has presented his photographic oeuvre in more than 60 exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the USA; e.g. collective exhibitions such as “She has female name” was presented at the Museum of Modern Art (Vienna, Austria) and the Zacheta Gallery in Warshaw (Poland), and he showed “Unknown Country” photo project as part of the Third Month of European Photography in Uferhallen, Berlin (Germany).
In 2020, Andrei won the “Gender Photography competition “ ( London) with the photo from the “Traditional interiors” project.
Andrei’s photographs are in private collections in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland and Lithuania.
