“The 100% MASCULINE project has a five-year history. I first presented it at the exhibition Beyond the Border at the Osnova Gallery (Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow),” Mikhail explains. “At that time, it consisted of a single part of the series — frontal male portraits. These are usually anonymous faces, collective archetypes rather than specific individuals. Executed in a monumental, propagandistic style, they reference totalitarian and patriarchal models of masculinity. I wanted to show how an artist can manipulate the viewer’s consciousness through imagery.”
